Veterans Day: Learning From Team Members Who Served

A reflection from The Bank of San Anotnio's Executive Vice President of Technology Operations, Tom Moreno on celebrating our country and those who proudly serve it.

Along with our senior executives, I had the privilege to talk with a group of team members at The Bank of San Antonio who served our country in the U.S. Armed Forces. The meeting left me with a sincere sense of gratitude for the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting the country we love.

While each person had a different personality, different experiences, and a different story to tell, they shared common beliefs and characteristics: duty, honor, service, leadership, teamwork, and mission. Because I work with this group, I not only heard about these principles in the stories they shared, I see them in their actions and interactions.

These are the most profound statements from our dialog about the military:

  • Everyone is a spoke in the wheel.
  • Leadership needs support from the troops for success.
  • Soldiers expect support from leadership and resources to accomplish the mission.
  • The team needs access to leadership.
  • Teamwork boils down to trust.
  • Everyone has a job and does their job so that you can do yours.
  • Everyone has a mission and is mission-oriented.
  • Whatever you want to happen is what you have to reward.
  • Recognition needs to be shared, and responsibility needs to be owned.
  • Lead from the front.
  • Wins are a result of the team. If the team fails, it’s a leadership failure.
  • You are only as strong as your weakest link.
  • If you are not properly trained with muscle memory, it costs lives.

Reflecting before the meeting, I thought about the huge gap between what we do in our daily lives and jobs as civilians and the potential harm our military service members face in performing their duties. After listening to my colleagues discuss military values, leadership, and teamwork, I realized that what we do tangibly affects lives as well — especially when considering people’s livelihoods to support their families.

I am proud to say that The Bank of San Antonio aligns with the same values our military teammates expressed. I am very grateful to the men and women who have served, and who continue to serve our great nation. We owe them our gratitude and our freedom.
